Robert was born in New Farm, Brisbane, Queensland on the 22 October 1920.
He enlisted in the RAAF at Sydney on the 9th April 1940. After initial training in NSW, he was shipped out to Vancouver on the 28th November 1940 where he was attached to the RCAF. He left Nova Scotia on the 17th March 1941 and after arriving in England eventually trained on Spitfires with 57 OTU where he was a founding member, and then spent time with 58 OTU. On the 14th July 1941, he joined 457 Squadron at Bagington, then 452 Squadron and then 32 Squadron where he flew Hurricanes. He embarked with 32 Squadron to Gibralter arriving on the 8th November 1942. He flew with various squadrons there and in North Africa. He returned to England on the 24th July 1943 and flew Mustangs, Tempests and Typhoons, as well as Spitfires while flying with 84 and 41 RAF Squadrons.

Joseph-Narcisse Gastonguay was a descendant of Gaston Guay, who arrived at Quebec around 1630 and settled there with his family. During the 18th century the family spread out across the city and on the Beaupré shore.
